What is a pimple?

The medical term for pimple is acne vulgaris. Pimple is an inflammatory disease of the oil or sebum producing glands of the skin, resulting in the formation of whiteheads, blackheads, red, inflamed bumps that may contain pus.

Some other common names that are frequently used to describe pimples are acne, zits, break outs, red spots, clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, lesions and rash.

The sebaceous (oil-producing) glands are usually found with hair follicles. The face, neck, upper back and chest have a lot of oil producing glands, thus pimples will normally occurred at these few areas. Certain areas of the body, such as the lip, will never get pimple due to the absent of oil producing glands.

Pimples can happen to anyone at any age, from babies to the elderly.  A higher percentage, about 85% of people between ages of 12 and 24 years old get this disorder. Mostly acne vulagris will clear up by the time they reach their 30s. However, some people continue to suffer from this skin disorder through their 40s and 50s. While for others, pimples might skip over them in their teenage years and just start to harass them in their late 20s, 30s, 40, or more.
